Hi there! I go by Kharis (she/her), and you’ve found your way to my little corner of the internet. Welcome!
Worth the Wake is a blog that tries to answer one question: “how do I get started?” As someone who has felt inadequate, is indecisive, finds it difficult to move past my comfort zone, and feels like I’m too much of a “beginner” (or fall into my perfectionistic tendencies) to take a chance at anything meaningful—if you resonate with any of those characteristics, I hope you’ll find what I post useful, or at least, feel more reassured that you are not alone.
Self-growth may be a lonely journey—but it doesn’t have to be. Here, I document my journey of self-growth and self-development, explore new skills and tools, experiment with optimizations and tiny lifestyle changes, and attempt to pull all of that together in articles and videos that are beginner-friendly and actionable.
If this all sounds great to you, you can find Worth the Wake articles here, at worththewake.com, as well as on most social platforms as @worthewake (Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest). I’m also on YouTube.
About the Blog
I started Worth the Wake for many reasons:
- As somewhere I could share thoughts, ideas, and tools on self-growth or building a system through a gentle, yet actionable lens
- As a personal blog documenting my own experiences with navigating self-growth & lifelong learning
- To provide content that is hopefully useful or resonates with readers looking for no-filter advice or insights
- To check off an item on my bucket list (start a blog or website)
Today, the core values and goals of Worth the Wake are as follows:
- Providing a variety of tools and resources, while acknowledging that everyone is different and have different needs when it comes to self-development
- Making self-growth less lonely and more fun with real-time LABs run by the creator herself and encouraging a community
- Allowing those who are hesitant to try something new (“risk-averse risk-takers”) step-by-step ideas on how they can move past their comfort zone
Above all, Worth the Wake values beginners of the craft. Too often, I have been scared of starting something or improving a skill because I considered myself a “beginner”. I love this quote I stumbled upon on Tumblr:
You say “amateur” as if it was a dirty word. “Amateur” comes from the Latin word “amare”, which means to love. To do things for the love of it.
Mozart in the Jungle (taken from meanwhileinfillory.tumblr.com)
By reading my blog posts or interacting with me on my socials, I invite you to join me in this journey as we begin our paths of growth. Because some dreams are worth the wake.
About the Blogger
Canadian 🍁, in my twenties. I have a full-time job, so I work on Worth the Wake or chip away at creative endeavours in my free time. I may also be tinkering with my system (Notion, Obsidian, or whatever tool I’m obsessed with at the moment), consuming media, or daydreaming about the next project I want to start.
I love passionate people, genuine creative expression, and independent content creators. From artists, musicians, STEM enthusiasts, physics nerds, storytellers, movie reviewers, improv comedians, and those filming a small slice of their life to show the world—there are a lot of creators who have added just that little something to my life that makes me feel grateful. Perhaps me wanting to be a so-called content creator stems from admiration of people like these, combined with a desire for self-expression.
I identify as a 9w1 under the Enneagram typing system (a system that, when used well, can be useful for self-growth). As is typical for a 9, I value balance and aim to incorporate that in many areas of my life, and throughout my content as well.
I used to be (and still am) a shy individual who has indecisiveness and perfectionism baked into her bones, preventing me or making it more difficult for me to accomplish a lot of things, such as making friends, socializing, developing my own opinions, even ordering from a menu (I get hit with decision paralysis…)! I hope Worth the Wake can be a helpful, kind resource for you as it hopefully will be for me.
Frequently (Un)Asked
What does “Worth the Wake” mean?
Worth the Wake is a pun on “worth the wait”. The logo is based on a sunrise, and the sun takes its time to rise every morning. That’s the idea behind the blog: it may take you a while to get there, but when you do, it’ll be worth it (and so are you).
What resources do you use to create content?
Credits will generally be posted via my Resources page on Notion, for YouTube videos. If sourcing someone, I will generally have it displayed on-screen as well. Credits used in the research of a blog post are posted within the article itself.
Worth the Wake is run on WordPress.org. Currently, I use Notion for databases, project management, and my Resources database, Obsidian for draft writing and brainstorming, Draw.io for mind maps, Google Docs for polished writing, and Note Forms for LABs forms.
For equipment, I have a custom-built PC equipped with a Ryzen 7700x CPU and a Radeon 7900XT GPU. My graphics tablet is an XP-PEN Star 06, and my videos are shot on a Google Pixel 6. I use a basic lavalier mic, and DaVinci Resolve for video editing. Other common tools in my arsenal are Figma, Krita, and Photopea. Photos and videos are generally from Unsplash or Pexels.
Common fonts I use include Lora, Albert Sans, Nunito, Work Sans, and Space Grotesk. These are all available via Google Fonts.
